K2 Base Camp vs Everest Base Camp: Cost, Difficulty & Which Trek to Choose in 2026

Every serious trekker eventually faces the same question: K2 Base Camp in Pakistan or Everest Base Camp in Nepal? Both reach the foot of an 8,000m giant. Almost everything else is different.
Cost: a fully guided 20-day K2 Base Camp trek with a licensed Pakistani operator runs $1,800-$2,600 per person all-inclusive from Islamabad. A comparable 14-day Everest Base Camp trek runs $1,400-$2,200 from Kathmandu — but add Lukla flights ($400+), and the gap narrows. K2 delivers far more expedition for the money: longer, wilder, and fully supported with porters, cooks, and camping infrastructure.
Difficulty: K2 Base Camp is the harder trek, full stop. Expect 12-14 days of walking on glacier moraine and ice, 6-8 hours daily, with a max altitude of 5,150m at base camp (5,585m if you cross Gondogoro La). Everest Base Camp is a teahouse trek on established trails with lodges every night. K2 demands better fitness, but no technical climbing skills on either route.
Crowds and wilderness: Everest Base Camp sees tens of thousands of trekkers per season with busy trails and full lodges. The Baltoro sees a few thousand — you will share Concordia, the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, with a handful of expeditions, not hundreds. Four 8,000m peaks (K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I & II) surround you at once; Everest Base Camp shows you Everest itself behind a curtain of ridges.
Logistics and permits: Nepal is simpler — fly to Lukla and walk. Pakistan requires a trekking visa, a licensed operator, and restricted-zone permits for the Baltoro, which your operator arranges. The extra paperwork buys you something Nepal cannot: a true expedition, with a full support crew, satellite tracking, and the rawest mountain scenery on Earth.
Our verdict: choose Everest Base Camp for your first high-altitude trek or if you prefer lodges and infrastructure. Choose K2 Base Camp if you want the wilder, grander, more adventurous expedition — and the story nobody at home has already heard. Our 2026 guaranteed departures run June through September with max 8 trekkers per group.
